Benefits of Waterjet Technology

The benefits of waterjet cutting are numerous.  Besides being able to cut nearly any material – including extremely hard or fragile materials – the process can be used to cut a variety of complex shapes, including sharp angles, bevels, and tightly spaced slots or holes.  Furthermore, the cutting action produces a minimal kerf (from 0.030 inch to 0.060 inch) that allows the creation of fine details and interior corners with tight radii.

One of the more highly documented benefits is that waterjet cutting does not produce a heat-affected zone because, unlike plasma cutting or laser cutting, it cuts without heat.  As a result, neither warping nor work hardening of the material occurs.  Consequently, edge finishes are smoother and the parts more precise that those produced by plasma cutting.  Also, whereas laser can cut material up to approximately ¾-inch thick, waterjets are capable of cutting material up to 10 inches thick.

Compared to EDM, which requires significantly longer processing time, waterjet is a quick-cutting process that can be used to machine a wider variety of materials.  Besides requiring less setup, it has advantage of not requiring the drilling of “start holes” prior to cutting.
